I have decided it's time for Noah to get his own phone. Is it permissive of me to give him our old cordless to play? I'm thinking it will keep him away from the regular phone. I'll let you know how that goes. Next up on agenda: find used mouse. Noah's currently crying because I'm keeping the mouse away from him.  Posted by Picasa

I don't think it's permissive at all. The way I see it kids need to explore. It's up to us to make sure that they can do it in as safe a way as possible, but that is also the least objectional way to us. We didn't get Dermot his own phone or remote control, but we did buy a spare remote so that if he managed to break it we still had the original remote. We also let him play with our cordless phone because he usually manages to hit all of the buttons except for the talk button. We have decided to keep Dermot gated out of the office/cats' room because there is way too much stuff in there to get him into trouble. When I do bring him to the computer with me he just wants to bang on the keyboard. So it's off limits.

I have an extra mouse! I don't think it's permissive at all. just make sure he doesn't figure out how to get the batteries out. I am a big believer in letting kids do stuff if they want to, as long as it's not teaching them something bad or it won't hurt them. best case scenario is that he plays with the phone for a while, realizes it's not that big a deal, and then never touches the real phone.

I'd definitely go for the old cordless rather than the real phone. My kids both immediately learned how to turn it on, and hit redial, made for some interesting explanations, although luckilly, they were usually to my mom or my sis. We actually bought Zach his own toy cell phone. It is super cute, because you can record a message in it to replay back to him, which he really loves. It is a 'Parent's' brand, in case you're curious. It has even survived being dropped in the bathtub.

Joseph likes to play with the mouse, too. He has some toy cell phones, but our cell phones are soo much better (so he thinks). I'm with Patrice and feel the same way. So far the girls are turning out ok ;o)
